Five-word Story

Write a short scene using every word in a group of five distinct entries.

Purpose

Write a short scene using every word in a group of five distinct entries.

Prepare your deck

Prepare at least five entries. Review meanings and remove unsuitable words before starting.

Recommended timer: 300 seconds. Select entries, choose prepared or shuffled order, and review notes before starting. All settings are editable in the workspace.

Run the activity

  1. Prepare at least five entries. Review meanings and remove unsuitable words before starting.
  2. Choose Five-word Story, shuffled or prepared order, and a five-minute timer or no timer.
  3. Reveal a group and write a scene using all its words. The order is optional. Use paper or your preferred writing app.
  4. Finish & Next moves to the next distinct group. A final group of one to four is labeled Final shorter challenge rather than padded with repeats.

An example

For “key, window, whisper, map, rain,” imagine a character finding a map by a rainy window while someone whispers about a missing key.

Variations and printing

Turn off timing for a longer scene or use prepared order to compare different writers’ responses to the same groups. Print the writing worksheet for a ruled writing area.

Useful packs

Sessions save a fixed snapshot. Editing a source deck does not change a running activity. Resume returns covered and paused; starting a new activity requires ending or resuming the existing one.
